Introduction to Oilfield Metallurgy

We have now run this for the past 15 years and it is by far our most popular course and we regularly run it on site for companies. It can be tailored to include topics of particular interest to our clients and it has provided useful information to a range of personnel. It also serves as a good introduction to the subject and many companies find that the course is particularly useful to new starters. Subjects covered include:

Corrosion and its Prevention

This course is aimed at engineers and design personnel and those wishing to gain a basic understanding of corrosion and its prevention

  • Selection and application of protective coatings
  • Surface treatments and corrosion protection

Nickel Alloys in the Oil and Gas Industry

This course covers:

  • Manufacture and Processing
  • Types of Nickel Alloys

An Introduction to Oiltool Welding

This course covers the metallurgy of welding and the factors that must be considered when welding materials, to be used for the oil and gas industry. The course will include:

  • Introduction to welding processes
  • Welding qualification for oil and gas applications
  • Welding for sour service
  • Post weld heat treatment
  • Welding of low alloy and stainless steels as well as nickel alloys for oil and gas
  • Challenges of welding for oil and gas applications

Why Metals Fail

This course is meant as an introduction to the failure of metals. It is aimed at engineering and design personnel and those who wish to gain a greater understanding of the metallurgy and failure mechanisms of components. The course will include many practical examples of component failures as well as a workshop on failure investigation.

Introduction to Aerospace Materials

This course is aimed at personnel who are working or who wish to work in the design, engineering and supply of materials that are used in the manufacture of aircraft. The course will discuss their selection and commonly encountered problems as well as production and manufacturing issues. 

Topics to be covered will include:

  • Factors that need to be considered for material selection
  • Fracture, fatigue and corrosion or aerospace materials
  • Properties and selection of nickel alloys
  • Properties and use of aluminium and titanium alloys
  • Composite components
  • Material testing and fabrication considerations.

Material Fabrication and Design

This course is aimed at companies who fabricate and design using metals and alloys. It will give personnel an understanding of how the fabrication of materials affect their propertes. Also the factors that need to be considered in design, such as strength, toughness, corrosion resistance and weldability will be discussed. It covers topics such as:

  • Castings and forgings

Engineering Materials : Selection and Properties

This course is aimed at engineering, design and manufacturing personnel who wish to gain a better understanding of the factors that effect material properties, selection and fabrication. Similar to all of our courses, practical examples will be used and it will aim to provide people with information that will assist in their various functions. The subjects covered will include:

  • Basic metallurgy : Structure and properties of materials
  • Steel: Heat treatment and alloying and how this affects its properties, fabrication and selection
  • The properties and selection of non ferrous alloys such as stainless steels, nickel, aluminium alloys
  • Composite materials
  • Mechanical Testing: Tensile, hardness and toughness testing
  • Material specifications : The important points to consider in their preparation and review

This is a new course aimed specifically at quality control and inspection personnel with the aim to provide them with a better understanding of the factors that affect the quality of materials. In addition it will discuss material non conformances and how they may affect properties and material selection. It will also cover mechanical testing and the reporting and interpretation of results. The subjects covered will include:

  • Basic metallurgy and how it affects material properties
  • Heat treatment and alloying of materials: How this affects the properties, selection and fabrication of materials
  • Steels, and non ferrous alloys: Summary of properties
  • Mechanical testing : How its carried out and the factors that may cause materials to fail
  • Understanding material certificates and the important points to note when reviewing them
  • Common non-conformances and how they affect material properties, selection and fabrication
